CATS. SPACE. THE MOON! What more needs to be said? That's a pretty good combination.
MewnBase is a survival simulator, set on the moon with a purrfect twist. Okay, that was a stretch. You take the role of a fine furry friend in a spacesuit to survive on a rather desolate looking moon-like surface. With an ongoing day/night cycle, and a small array of weather effects, the wide empty space still manages to have some atmosphere (I’m sorry)
The overall goal of the game is to survive for as long as you can, expanding your base and survivability as you go. By discovering strange artifacts, you can unlock furrther technologies via research - from improving your tools and food, to expanding your base with a wealth of helpful rooms
While still in development, there are a few odd behaviours. Compared to many other games of the same genre, the controls may feel a little strange. Interacting with the world is done in single clicks, no need to hold to gather resources, and items on your hotbar can only be interacted with by selecting them - no hovering your mouse and hitting Q to drop an item (which may have caught us out a number of times)
Happily, MewnBase includes no real outside threats. The biggest challenges are balancing O2 usage and Hunger, along with keeping enough power for your base to continue to function - the last thing you want is to come back to a base with no power or oxygen after a long journey out in the wild!
This is a very well thought out game with what seems like a well designed difficulty curve for it’s style. Players who are looking for exploration of a randomly generated expansive world will be right at home in the survival mode, though those who prefer to focus on base building may prefer the creative mode included to design to their heart’s content
Overall MewnBase comes in as a good contender in it’s genre, offering a balanced and fun experience with gameplay suited to either side of the genre (survival and base building), and with a relatively consistent stream of updates coming from the developer, things can only get better
